Leading Municipal Pension Plan Deploys SecureSphere for Data Security

FOSTER CITY, Calif., Feb. 7, 2006 – Imperva™, the leader in data security for the data center, today announced that the Houston Municipal Employees Pension System (HMEPS) has selected both the SecureSphere™ Database Security Gateway and Web Application Firewall to protect its back-end database from attack.  HMEPS chose SecureSphere for its unique ability to provide integrated database and application security under a unified management system.

HMEPS provides municipal employees of the nation’s fourth largest city with pension management and administration services. SecureSphere is being deployed to protect this sensitive database from external and internal threats. HMEPS selected SecureSphere over competing products for its database and web application security capabilities, automated security policy creation that requires no manual tuning, and unified management.

“Protecting the security and privacy of confidential data belonging to plan participants is our number one priority,” said Scott Otto, IS Manager for Houston Municipal Employees Pension System. “SecureSphere enables us to protect our database from attack, misuse, and theft — without the need to constantly tune security policies and separately manage database and application security products. A second reason for selecting Imperva was the company’s ability to protect web portal applications, which HMEPS plans to offer its members in the future.”

“While providing web access to pension plan accounts significantly reduces costs for the administrator, it also exposes confidential data to security and privacy risks,” said Alan Norquist, vice president of marketing for Imperva.  “By combining database and application protection, SecureSphere will enable Houston Municipal Employees Pension System to defend its web portal and confidential data against virtually any form of data attack.”
